Krans Structural Assessment

Ilanga Consulting Engineers was commissioned to undertake a structural assessment of an existing single-storey house in Johannesburg. The existing house was constructed out of Pink Quartize underlying the topsoil of the region. The assessment entailed evaluating the intent of the original construction, the materials used on the walls of the house, as well as an assessment of the existing roof.

Ilanga Consulting Engineers evaluated the structure based on the prescripts of the National Building Regulations (SANS 10400) and its associated design codes. Ilanga Consulting Engineers found several structural defects, including structural cracks in the masonry walls; non-compliance of structural systems to current building regulations. The outcomes of the investigations were communicated to the client, with recommendations on remedial action.

The assessment was concluded in two sessions.
